Compensation Sense 101 is Here. New Book Provides Answers to Questions About Compensation and Total Rewards.

Compensation Sense Book

“Understanding how to use compensation and total rewards as a competitive advantage has never been more important!” This statement, from the Foreword by United Way of Central Indiana’s Chief Talent Officer Nancy Ahlrichs, helps explain why I wrote my new book: Compensation Sense 101 – Common Sense Answers to Your Questions About Employee Compensation and Total Rewards.

The book is the realization of a long-time dream. More than that, it is the culmination of a long career as a compensation and total rewards professional serving and supporting HR departments, C-suite executives, and business leaders. With more than 25 years of experience in this field, I have learned much (and continue to learn, of course). So, the time seemed right for me to share some of my knowledge and – as Nancy says – “to simplify the mystique of compensation.”

Indeed, the problem most people face with compensation is that it seems like the proverbial “black box”. In other words, it is both mysterious and misunderstood. With that in mind, it has always been my mission to educate clients and others about the many complex facets of employee compensation and total rewards. From that mission, this book was born.

I’ve organized the book in eight main chapters, each presented in a question-and-answer format:

  • Compensation Administration
  • Base Pay
  • Pay Differentials
  • Incentive Plans
  • Sales Compensation
  • Compliance
  • ROI of Compensation
  • Communicating About Compensation

Between this logical arrangement, the content preview at the beginning of each chapter, and the Glossary of common compensation and total rewards terms, you should be able to quickly find the information and answers you need.

Designed to be “evergreen” with long-term relevance for the industry, I published Compensation Sense 101 in time to introduce it at the Indiana SHRM and Kentucky SHRM fall 2018 conferences. I have been gratified and touched by the response of my peers and those who are reading and sharing the book. Indeed, it is heartwarming to know that the path of others following in my footsteps will be made easier because of this work. As Nancy expressed, “Whether you are a seasoned C-suite executive or a generalist early in your career as a compensation and total rewards professional, you will benefit from this practical guide.”

In my company, Total Reward Solutions, we often ask, “Are your employees an investment or an expense?” It is my hope that you find your employees are indeed an investment, and that you will invest in your own knowledge with the help of this easy Q and A book.
